Social Media Followers - Quality vs. Quantity

Social media allows professionals, companies, and individuals to reach people that they would never have otherwise. Today, there is significant pressure for social media accounts to have a high number of followers across every platform. People tend to measure success based on these numbers without considering quality versus quantity.

At a first glance, the number of followers that an account has would equate to business performance, however, this is often not the case. Because of this assumption, many people and organizations jump to purchasing fake followers. If you look closely at many accounts with a large number of followers, you might notice that the actual posts receive very little engagement.

Before you follow the trend to chase followers, consider who is in your audience versus the size of your audience. Even for an account with numerous legitimate followers, they might be irrelevant if they do not fall within the accountโ€™s target market. If your following is considerably small (such as a few hundred or thousand depending on the accountโ€™s purpose) as long as you reach the right people, you might not actually need more followers. For example, a realtor who sells properties in Miami would be better off having a few hundred followers ages 25-55 who are based in Florida, than thousands of followers with ages ranging from 15-25 in Europe.

To attract the right followers, take advantage of geotagging, use appropriate hashtags, and engage with your market. While it can be time-consuming, creating an effective social media account will be well worth the extra effort.

Of course, it is still essential to reach new audiences; you never know who could be a potential customer or client. However, strive for engagement, such as likes, comments, and direct messages that will result in leads and sales.

In an attempt to grow social media presence, it is critical to keep your goal at the forefront. Remember that creating content is likely not your primary focus, creating revenue is. Social media is a tool to help you to reach your goals, but do not misplace your attention on keeping up with influencers and big corporations.
